چکیده

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by myelin loss, axonal pathology and progressive neurodegeneration [1]. Disease starts in 85% of cases with a clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), a first (sub)acute neurological event with demyelination. Different clinical subtypes of MS exist, with 85-90% of patients experiencing relapsingremitting (RR) disease in which clinical relapses alternate with remission [2]. About 40% of RR-MS patients develop secondary progressive (SP) MS with progressive neurological disease. In 10-20% of patients, MS manifests as a primary progressive (PP) disease with a progressive course from the onset [2].

Sperm-associated antigen 16 is a novel target of the humoral autoimmune response in multiple sclerosis.

We have previously identified eight novel autoantibody targets in the cerebrospinal fluid of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, including sperm-associated Ag 16 (SPAG16). In the current study, we further investigated the autoantibody response against SPAG16-a protein with unknown function in the CNS-and its expression in MS pathology. Using isoelectric focusing, we detected SPAG16-specific oligo...

A challenging entity: multiple sclerosis or collagen tissue disorders: A case series of 6 patients

Background: Multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating processes are sometimes difficult to differentiate from the neurological involvement in autoimmune diseases. Distinguishing multiple sclerosis from other lesions due to autoimmune diseases is crucial to avoid unsuitable or delayed treatments. Methods: Charts of 6 patients diagnosed with mimicking multiple sclerosis between 1996 and 2014 we...

Comparison of Epstein Barr virus antibodies and Tcell cytokines production in patients with multiple sclerosis and healthy individuals

Abstract   Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disease of central nervous system with destruction of myelin sheath mediated by auto reactive CD4+ T Lymphocytes. Because of the possible role of Epstein-Barr virus in etiology of MS and T cells immune response, the aim of this study was to evaluate anti-Epstein Barr virus antibodies as a marker of reactivity and p...
